How to Report a Google Review: Step by Step
Unfair or fake Google review? Here is how to report it the right way, which reasons Google accepts and what happens next.
One unfair one-star review can scare customers away. The good news: Google does not allow everything. You can report reviews that break Google’s policies yourself. Whether Google removes them is up to Google alone.
Which reviews break the rules
- Not a real experience: The person was never a customer, for example a mix-up with another business.
- Conflict of interest: A review from a competitor, a former employee or the owner.
- Insults, hate, threats or personal attacks.
- Spam and fakes: many identical texts, bought reviews, advertising.
- Off topic: for example political opinions that have nothing to do with the visit.
- Personal data such as phone numbers or full names of employees.
A bad but honest review is not a rule violation. It is better to reply to it in a friendly way.
How to report the review
- Open your business in Google Maps or Google Search.
- Go to the reviews and find the review.
- Tap the three dots next to the review and choose “Report review”.
- Choose the reason that fits. Pick the reason that really applies, not just any one.
- Submit your report.
As the owner, you can also use the review management tool in your Google Business Profile. There you can see the status of your report and, if it is rejected, appeal once. The wording may differ slightly depending on your device.
What happens next
Google checks the report. This usually takes a few days. Either the review is removed or it stays. Reporting the same review several times does not speed anything up.
Good to know: Since 2026, Google in Germany shows a note on some profiles such as “Reviews removed due to defamation complaints”. This note only counts removals after legal complaints, not normal reports about rule violations. That is why “Report review” is usually the first and most sensible step.
How VOQX helps
Every night, VOQX reads your new reviews, checks each critical review against Google’s rules and shows you which ones may be reportable, with the reason and step-by-step instructions. You report them yourself. VOQX does not promise any deletion.
VOQX is software. You report yourself; whether a platform removes anything is up to the platform.
