How to Spot Fake Reviews: 8 Warning Signs
How to recognize fake reviews on Google and other platforms, and what you can do about them.
Not every bad review is fake. But there are typical signs that point to a fake or unfair review. The more of them apply, the more closely you should look.
The 8 warning signs
- No matching visit: You cannot find the name, the order or the appointment anywhere.
- Wrong details: It is about a product or a room that you do not even have.
- Many reviews in a short time, for example five one-star reviews in one day.
- New profile: The reviewer has written only this one review, or many on the same day.
- Similar texts from different reviewers.
- Close to the competition: The profile praises a direct competitor at the same time.
- Former employees: Insider knowledge that only someone from the team can have.
- No content: just one star without text, often in series.
These are only signs, not proof. Do not publicly accuse the reviewer of anything. Reply calmly: “We cannot find any record of your visit. Please contact us so we can clear this up.”
What you can do
- Report the review to the platform with the right reason, for example “Conflict of interest” or “Spam”.
- Write down the date, the text and your reasons. This helps if you appeal.
- Reply calmly so that other customers can see your side.
How VOQX helps
VOQX spots clusters (“4 critical reviews in 2 days”) and shows signs of a possible conflict of interest, for example when a profile praises a competitor at the same time. Whether the platform removes a review is up to the platform.
VOQX is software. You report yourself; whether a platform removes anything is up to the platform.
